Can civilians go super sonic?
Today, I watched an old, obsolete subsonic jet trainer flying in to a small airport near my home. I got to wondering about why supersonic aircraft are not available to civilian pilots. Could a wealthy individual buy a surplus F-4 Phantom?
Answer:
1) Ex-Military aircraft can usually only be flown in Resticted Category, which basically means they can only fly in airshows. There are lots of other restrictions, including not flying them over densely populated areas (cities) and you can only carry required crew members, not passengers.
2) Supersonic flight is prohibited over the United States except by the military.
3) The insurance companies wouldn't insure 99.99% of civilian pilots who could afford to buy one.
