In Which I Actually DEFEND Spirit Airlines! (View From the Wing)
I've been a frequent critic of Spirit Airlines. This screed of an editorial
from Sunshine State News even closes with my admonition about the airline, Can
you blame Gary Leff, who runs the popular frequent flier blog View From the
Wing for saying of Spirit, "This is the airline that's famous for hating their
customers"? [...]

You Heard It Here First, Sun Country Airlines Is Back With A Vengeance
1982 was the year that Sun Country Airlines came into existence, and they were formed from a pool of talented former Braniff Airlines employees. That company had gone under, and these motivated people wanted to start their own flying operation. They did very well for themselves, unfortunately what happened in September of 2001 dealt such a blow to the airline that they stopped all operations in December. Fortunately, a few visionary investors provided the needed funds to give Sun Country Airlines another chance. That is what this company has demonstrated time and again in the face of harsh economic times.
Sun Country Airlines was purchased by investors and scheduled flights returned to normal in 2002. A few of the popular destinations they transported passengers to on these schedules included Orlando Florida, Los Angeles California and Denver Colorado among others. Shortly thereafter even more destinations were added such as Washington DC and New York. Being based in St. Paul added to its overwhelming popularity in Minnesota. Service to passengers has been the main goal of improvement since their return in early 2002.
Just in December of 2010, announcements were made that Sun Country Airlines would be providing air service to Washington DC from Lansing Michigan. The US Department of Transportation was involved in the selection process. Since they are based in Minneapolis, that is where the flight will begin.
The airline will stop at Lansing to pick up passengers and then continue to Washington DC. Since this was just announced, the stops in Lansing have not yet begun. These will also be daily stops at Lansing which will be more business for the airline.
In late 2009, Sun Country provided a unique experience to a group of children with an imaginary flight to the North Pole. So it is no surprise they named it: A Flight To The North Pole. The airline worked in association with The United Way to help put this together. They just wanted to do something very special and nice for some kids over the holidays. What they did was taxi the plane for half an hour on the field and employees pretended they were flying to the North Pole.
Sun Country Airlines is still alive to fly another day even after motions for bankruptcy were approved. They are not down for the count by any means. So all is proceeding normally for this type of situation, and more will be announced in the very near future. Considering their overall founding philosophy, we are confident about the future for them. This is smart airline that was founded by highly experienced aviation professionals. All of these factors are taken into account when a company is looking at bankruptcy. Sun Country has a lot to look forward to in the next year as well as years after.
